Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Squad But Joe McCarthy Misses Out
Newly reappointed head coach Andy Farrell has named captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland roster for the fall internationals, but lock McCarthy has been excluded.
The captain, who has not played since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain whether he will be fit to play against the All Blacks in the US on November 1.
Lock Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot injury he sustained during the first Lions match against the Wallabies in July.
Ulster forward Izuchukwu and Munster winger Calvin Nash also miss out because of injury, while number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation after the Lions tour.
Dublin province prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new member in the 34-player squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says new provincial pair Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht winger Bolton will head to Chicago as "backup".
After facing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, Ireland will play Japan, the Wallabies and world champions South Africa in the Irish capital.
"There's an exciting look to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," said the coach, who returns to Ireland duty after a break to coach the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.
In a largely experienced squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will again compete for the starting number 10 spot. The fly-half role is remains available, as the two players set to face off for the first time in Saturday's URC match at Croke Park.
Frawley is the third number 10 chosen as the coach deciding not to calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At number 9, the Ireland boss has picked British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer international victories over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a recall for the western province's Blade, chosen to teammate Ben Murphy.
Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced cohort of centre options. Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the youngster is also a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at full-back.
Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his first Ireland outings over the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over the Lelos and Portugal.
Paddy McCarthy is the sole new name in the Irish forwards. The loose-head prop has started two of Leinster's URC United Rugby Championship matches so far and featured in the second string's defeat by England in Bristol previously.
The 22-year-old was included in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, but did not earn a international appearance.
Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while experienced Northern province second row Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.
Conan, who played in all three Lions matches over the summer, is set to deputise for Doris should the captain does not regain full fitness in time to play New Zealand.
The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on Monday before traveling to the US on the following day.
