Guitar Hero Turns 20 – How a Plastic Axe Connected the Gap Between Rock Fans

It has been two decades since the legendary game first launched across the Atlantic, giving everyday gamers the means to become a rock star. Not literally, though you'd be hard-pressed telling that anyone who's nailed the epic lengthy guitar solo in front of a packed living-room audience.

Developed by Harmonix, the game gave players a guitar-shaped controller to follow on-screen cues moving along the display synchronized to a song. Every sequence corresponded to specific notes, creating the sensation of a genuine performance.

The studio previously experimented with rhythm games before partnering with the publisher, which was purchased by Activision in 2006. Collaboratively, they established the foundations for an unlikely billion-dollar franchise that had a significant influence on numerous musicians featured, showcasing classic groups to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

Michael Dornbrook, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, remembers the initial budgetary hurdles of licensing the recordings – even though the first two games primarily featured cover versions.

“We rerecorded every song since the dollar figure prohibitive,” he explains. “Despite having the necessary permissions alone, it was extremely difficult. We failed to secure acts such as legendary groups – RedOctane was operating on a shoestring budget, and we were fairly certain the project would flop. But once Guitar Hero became a hit, album purchases and radio play were going up, all artists desired to participate.”

He continues: “Among the amazing things was the number of parents got in touch and thanked us for exposing their kids to the songs they loved. It evolved into an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Finds a New Audience

Irish blues-rock band one featured act had Never Too Late on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist Paul Mahon remembers the way the game brought classic rock back into vogue: “The game provided a larger, new demographic. Generally this had been considered music that was past it, however once it got included in the title and teenagers were finding it, abruptly it became trendy. That legitimised the genre, eliminating the outdated tag. It gave our catalog renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the Answer’s debut album remained unreleased in the US, so the game served as a primary platform for exposure for the group as they went on US tour opening for AC/DC. “Their crew were playing Never Too Late on the tour bus, and some of them recognized us from Guitar Hero,” he notes.

Major Band Spin-offs Enduring Influence

Rock’s biggest acts quickly capitalised on the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and others featuring in specialized game editions centered around each band’s catalogue and associated stories, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, it was said earned the band more money than any of their studio albums. It moved more than 500,000 copies upon release, and sales of their songs saw an increase of up to 40% at a time when the music business was already collapsing.

The series continues to inspire quick-handed fanaticism among its fans. Earlier this year, a streamer completed a remarkable feat featuring Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough power-metal song popularized through Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with almost identical mechanics but an array of personalization features. The song is challenging even in expert mode, not to mention played at double speed and without missing a single one of its near 4,000 notes. The streamer stated it took nine months to accomplish.

“The game offers a, imaginary experience. Just as with other games, that doesn’t mean you should use a real gun and enlist,” says musician Herman Li.

DragonForce had already completed a successful tour before Through the Fire and Flames was featured in the third game, yet he explains it turned them into a household name. “I recall our distributors calling to tell me that our records were moving rapidly,” he shares. “It exploded when we next toured, and we performed just before the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, DragonForce’s exposure from Guitar Hero was so immense that it has threatened to eclipsing everything else the band has done. Recently, the track was used in promotional material for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I thought otherwise, but now I accept it,” he admits. “If you only listen to one DragonForce song, it’s totally cool – everyone’s got their own musical journey and I'm pleased we played a role in fans' experiences”.

Enduring Legacy from the Iconic Controller

Top-tier promotion, whether it’s for cars, apparel or games, goes further than selling something – it inspires a desire. Was the game able to tap into that? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” he confirms. “The excitement of performing as a music icon in the spotlight. Since the beginning, the creators felt that humans have a natural human desire to make music, and their goal was to use technology to enable everyone to participate”.

Most of Guitar Hero games came out in just a five-year period from 2005 to 2010, including spin-offs such as DJ Hero, complete with a spinning deck, and Band Hero. Subsequently, corporate focus in plastic instruments waned, except for a brief comeback several years later.

Games like Clone Hero and newer releases have kept the scene active, with expectations of something from the founders on the way. Recently formed developers has entered production on their first music game. The initial creators are participating as special advisers. Is the world ready to embrace a new entry following the classic?

“Our team believed those games could be like Madden where you can releases,” he remarks. “With abundant new music that it could be perennially popular, so I’ve always been optimistic. It's entirely possible why it can’t continue for future fans.”
