Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, without initially offer additional information.
Background: Rising Tensions and Prior Developments
This event takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Key developments preceding this strike include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the region, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with indications of more discussions scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They dismissed claims about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation remains fluid, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
