James Comey court appearance
He has maintained his innocence regarding the charges

Previous FBI chief James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and hindering a lawmaking procedure.

His legal representative submitted the plea representing him in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.

His attorney announced he would try to have the proceedings dismissed for various factors including that his the accused, a detractor of President Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

James Comey was charged shortly after the former president urged his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on Wednesday, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald told the court they intended to file several motions to dismiss the case before a trial, arguing the prosecution was retaliatory and that a US attorney was unlawfully assigned to assume control of the proceedings.

The former director's case was first handled by Erik Siebert, who resigned under scrutiny from Donald Trump after his examination into an additional rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to initiate prosecution.

Courtroom Atmosphere

Mr Comey came across in positive mood as he came into the courtroom on mid-week, chatting with his attorneys and sharing humor. He was accompanied by his spouse, Mrs Failor and child Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the previous administration terminated.

After listening to the magistrate read his legal protections and the two counts against him in court on mid-week, Mr Comey was inquired if he comprehended the allegations.

"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he stated to the judge.

Previous Events

Mr Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about several months into Donald Trump's first term as commander-in-chief. At the moment, he was directing an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any relationships between the Russian government and the presidential campaign.

While in office, James Comey sparked a counter-response from Democrats when he stated just days before the 2016 election that he was probing political contender Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were never brought, resulting in negative feedback from the Republican party as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Prosecutors claim Mr Comey gave untrue statements to Congress during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They say he misled the legislative body by saying he had not permitted an individual at the FBI to leak to media organizations information about the agency probes.

Government lawyers also allege the defendant of "wrongfully trying to sway, obstruct and slow" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.

Public Statements

In a video Mr Comey published to his Instagram after he was accused, he stated he was wrongly accused and charged Donald Trump of conducting himself like a "autocrat".

"Our household have known for considerable time that there are ramifications to standing up to Donald Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "So let's have a trial."

These allegations against Mr Comey surfaced after Donald Trump posted on social media calling for his attorney general, Pam Bondi, prosecute Mr Comey and other people.
